This week kindergarten students were introduced to the calculator. The children immediately loved pressing the buttons and getting to know all about it. We started off in a large group discussing the different buttons we saw on the
digital tool and naming some of the familiar ones. Students took turns thinking of numbers to add together, and learned that by pressing the equal sign they could find the sum of those numbers. We used the calculator all week as a tool to help us solve addition problems by using the plus and equal signs. Later in the week we solved "calculator mysteries." These mysteries were addition problems that the children completed on their own calculators. Afterwards, we shared our answers. Each student also had the opportunity to make up his or her own calculator mystery.
