Halloween Fun in K!

10/27/2016

Halloween spirit is in the air!  The upcoming holiday guided the theme for our learning this week. The children named their class pumpkin and later wrote amazing creative Halloween stories about the pumpkin's exciting adventures. In reading workshop, we hunted for some new words we learned this week in Halloween poems that we read.  During math workshop, we estimated how tall our pumpkins were by using unified cubes and then compared our estimates with smaller pumpkins.  During choice time, the children water colored their own pumpkin pictures and made some fun decorations for our rooms, including our classroom doors. To top off a great week, we carved our pumpkins in anticipation for all to view next week!   Make sure to check out the Kindergarten hallway.  We are ready to say, BOO!

Reading Super Powers

10/20/2016

We have reading super powers! This week our young readers were introduced to their very first reading strategy, or as we like to call them, super powers!  Picture power will help the children to figure out the words by using the pictures on each page in their books. We will be talking about several other super powers that will facilitate their journey to becoming a reader and support those students already reading. Using super powers is a fun way to get the children excited about reading books. Please be sure to ask them what super power they are studying during reading workshop as the weeks progress.

A Trip to Fernbrook Farms

10/14/2016

The kindergarten children traveled down to Bordentown this week to visit Fernbrook Farms for our first field trip of the year. Fernbrook is a very special working farm where the children were able to experience seeing several animals, such as cows, sheep, and goats.  We had a great time going for a ride on a tractor to see some pigs, and then enjoyed walking through the fields to pick some vegetables.  Along the way, we observed some dogwood trees and learned how they produce some edible fruit.  The children also had an educational lesson about the soil on the farm and then had fun making their own soil.  It was a spectacular day and great fun!  What a wonderful way to kick off the fall season.

Number Order

10/7/2016

The children were busy at work this week learning about numbers and discovering that they are all around us. We began our study by focusing mostly on single digit numbers. After some discussion and exploration, the children practiced the proper writing formation of zero through ten and then had the opportunity to be exposed to these numbers in different ways. We used gems to outline numbers, we painted numbers in sand, we used play-doh to recreate numbers, and we participated in many other fun activities. We are definitely ready to begin learning about the tricky teen numbers!
