Do you prefer summer or fall? Would you rather have vanilla or chocolate ice cream? These are just a few examples of questions the kindergarten students asked each other this week as we learned about tally marks and how they make it easier to keep track of numbers by placing them in groups of five. First, we revisited counting by fives, and then we asked the children to conduct their own surveys, which was a lot of fun! They surveyed the class and kept track of the students on a checklist. The children recorded their results and verified that they had twenty-one responses ensuring everyone was included in the survey. They were able to total their results easily now that they know how to use tally marks and enjoyed sharing their results with the class.
Kindergarten students put a lot of time and effort into the fabulous persuasive writing pieces they composed to share with you after the Spring Concert. It was so fantastic to be able to get together and share with loved ones. In addition to these specific pieces, students were able to share writing portfolios from the school year. It is amazing to see how much fantastic work and growth your children have made. We thank you for taking the time to come in, see a beautiful Spring Concert and spend some intimate time with your child afterwards. We can laugh and cry, get scared or feel sad when we connect with characters in stories. Most recently, we have connected with the characters of the Three Little Pigs and spent time acting out different versions of one of our favorite stories. We considered whether the wolf is really big and bad and why the pigs make the choices they make. Some of our own versions of the Three Little Pigs took turns of their own.
This week, Kindergarten students were introduced to the concept of being an Avid Reader! Avid Readers are independent readers who react to books and find ways to share those reactions with others! We are encouraging our Avid Readers to carry books with them wherever they go. They know that the more they practice the stronger their reading muscles will become!
