We Remember When...

As we approach our Memory Unit in Writing Workshop, we have come to the understanding that a major part of what makes us unique are the many memories we hold dear.  In an effort to dive deeper into our  "What Makes Me Me" guiding question, the students of kindergarten spent time reflecting on memories of their time at MKA.  The unique memories celebrate each child's distinct presence as a member of our MKA community.

Read All About It!

11/10/2017

This week our super readers got the opportunity to put their new super powers to use at the Scholastic Book Fair!  Cougars were able to shop for new reading materials throughout the week and were also fortunate enough to meet three of our favorite authors; Peter Brown, Brad Meltzer, and Peter Reynolds! The authors shared what inspires them and how they create their stories which motivated our authors to showcase their skills in the classroom. We are having many class discussions about different feelings and how they are present in our writing pieces and are so excited to put our skills to use and begin our next writing unit focusing on memories!

Number Writing!

11/3/2017

Following an introduction to the concept of addition last week, the children created their own Halloween number stories. This week, we continued our Halloween spirit by practicing our number writing in a spooky setting! Using our D’Nealian handwriting books, the children not only practiced writing their numbers, but also holding their pen correctly and following the dotted lines from top to bottom. They also participated in a series of different number writing activities. They had fun creating a class number book, practicing their number recognition, and writing the numbers together in a “Big Book.” Then they thought of items to represent the numbers on each page, such as two cougar paws representing the number two and three school buses for the number three.  During our Reflection time, some of the children created their own individual number books. In addition to the books, the children enjoyed playing Ghost Bingo, Number Scrolls, and a game called Roll and Record that involves rolling dice.
