As school comes to a close, we have been reflecting on our amazing year together. We have all grown so much! The children have been exposed to many new areas; to name a few, we learned new reading and writing strategies, we became super star mathematicians, we won and lost several rounds of jeopardy, we performed a play on stage before an audience, and we made many new friends, but most importantly, we had fun. It is difficult to say goodbye, as each child holds a very special place in our hearts. As much as we will miss them, we know they are ready to officially move up to first grade. We are very proud of our Blue and Green K Cougars! Thank you for all of your support throughout the year, and we wish you a restful and wonderful summer. Until next year!
Green and Blue K engaged in a fun-filled day of exciting activities, challenges and most importantly sportsmanship. From the bouncy houses to slap shot challenge, and a pit stop for some cotton candy, everyone had a blast. The biggest highlight from the day was sinking Mr. Langbein and Mr. Pyke in the dunk tank! We thank Coach P for putting on such an exciting day to close out the school year. GO GREEN! GO BLUE!
This week, kindergarten students put the final touches on their non-fiction writing pieces that will be showcased to friends and family at the kindergarten writing celebration. The students created intricate books on an animal of their choice after completing research in the library. The pieces feature an introduction to the animal, information about their habitat and diet, and a fun fact to top it off!
During math workshop, the kindergarteners have been busy. They began this math unit by creating their own unique surveys to find out what their classmates like best. Some questinos that were asked were, "What is your favorite pet?", "What is your favorite dessert?", "What is your favorite movie?" and "What is your favorite kind of airplane?" They then provided options from which their classmates to choose. Before surveying the crowd, they made predictions about which of the options they thought would be the most popular. Then it was time to begin asking their friends. They quickly figured out that keeping an accurate record of the classmates they had already asked was extremely important to collect precise data. The students used a grid to check off each person they had surveyed. They then practiced their newly acquired skill of tally marks to record their data. Once all students had been asked, and all data was in the form of tally marks, the students then transferred their data to bar graphs which visually displayed their findings. They had so much fun finding out the likes and dislikes of their friends and teachers.
Throughout life, we are all on a journey to determine what makes us, us. What better time to start than in Kindergarten! At this age children are just beginning to know themselves, what they are interested in, what they are good at, and what they would like to try. They are learning how to manage their feelings, how to navigate their social relationships, and how to be part of a new community. We support their journey through our Reggio Emilia inspired approach to teaching, and we feel this guiding question, What Makes Me,Me?, keeps us on track to help the children discover their voices and their passions. Our play is named after our guiding question, and it is the culmination of our amazing year. Our children have certainly found their voices and some of their passions through this experience.
In our play, our young explorers set out on their journey to find out what makes them unique. They meet many animal friends along the way who share with them what makes them unique. The children chose the book The Illustrated Compendium of Amazing Animal Facts to guide our play process. Kindergarten students look forward to learning an "animal fact of the day" from this book daily at morning meeting, so it was only fitting that we support our students' quest for knowledge about animals and have a little fun at the same time by incorporating our new found knowledge in our play.
Kindergarten enjoyed a rewarding experience at Flat Rock Brook in Bergen County! We split into three groups and set out on a Spring nature walk. Students were ecstatic to see the resident turtles in the ponds seeking sunlight on rocks and fallen branches. We were empowered to use four of our five senses as we explored the grounds. We even closed our eyes and listened quietly for the Spring Peeper frogs. We were thankful to learn about the intricacies of nature and the many reasons to value the environment.
The kindergarten students want to get caught....reading!!! Avid readers never want to put their books down. They read standing up, they read in the car, they read cereal boxes, they find quiet places to read, and they read books over and over again. Not only do avid readers look like they are reading, they think about their reading and want to talk about their books with as many people as possible. Becoming an avid reader requires practice and the kindergarten children are doing just that...see if you can catch them too!
What Makes Me, Me? We are special, we are unique, we are many things. We are us! Kindergarten students have been exploring this topic all year long. This week, the children worked on a project involving what makes each of us special. Green K students wrote passionately about themselves, and Blue K students drew and painted pictures of themselves doing things that make them unique. All of their work was combined to form puzzle pieces creating a beautiful mural that is displayed in our hallway. Our Kindergarten play is coming up very soon, and it's no surprise that the title of our play is "What Makes Me, Me!" Please stay tuned for updates and details about this exciting event! In the meantime, we are busy making preparations to highlight all of our forty four kindergartners.
Kindergarten students began to frequently ask, when is Cougie going to give us a new reading power?! They were so excited this week to finally receive another letter from Cougie! Cougie wrote...
